Here’s a candid review of my latest watercolor painting including some goals I had, how well I met them, watercolor tips, and how to improve in your painting. I hit a lot of points in my different paintings where my family will say “looks good are you glad it’s done?” And I laugh because it’s NOT done and I’m still kinda embarrassed about showing it. This is one of those; I’ve got the under colors in and am starting on getting the different values in, but really it’s nowhere near what’s in my head. I still need to balance out the values and be bold about putting in the darks. Watercolor is opposite from most different types of paintings because you need can’t just dab your highlights on at the end. White in watercolor is the paper below! You need to “save your whites” along with all your other highlights right from the beginning, which takes planning and care. You also have to think backwards and go from light to dark. This leads a lot of people to stop before it’s done and let a painting stay pretty but flat when it could really be fantastic. I’m working on pushing myself to really add to darks to my work to increase the range of value. Happy birthday to my favorite new 6 yr old! We love your imagination, silly stories, the way you tell us your dreams, and your enthusiasm for all your hobbies! Even though you are only motivated to do school because you want to be a farmer and farmers need to read to fix their tractors, I still love that I get to teach you! Your Bible song singing is adorable and I love that you are learning to enjoy praying so much. We’re excited to see how you grow buddy!
